It's time I acknowledged a big debt of gratitude I have to all the articulate and gruesome folks who've paved the path of my wicked ways. The plot twisters, word conjurers and poison pens.
Mystery writers, you've been an inspiration since my early juvenile delinquency, hiding under the garment racks reading Nancy Drew while mummy was shopping for my boarding school wardrobe, swapping Agatha Christie novels with Grandma on an extended tour of Ireland in the 70's, halcyon days. You've taught me all the best tricks, how to pick locks, mask the taste of arsenic with almond cookies, execute the perfect bank job and leave a stinky trail of red herrings in my wake. I've curled up with you between the sheets, stashed you in the back of my car and locked you in the bathroom, a truer friend I've never had! And man are you smart, just when I think I've got you figured out, you go all Rue Morgue on me and next thing I know there's an orangutan sneaking out the chimney.
To show my heart felt thanks, I'm declaring August as "Mystery Writer Appreciation Month". Writers get a 20% rebate on purchases in my Makers Market and Etsy shops just send me the ISBN # for your book, or link to your short stories or blog. And seriously, thanks, you really are a rare and talented breed.
